Hey renegade sports lovers...it's once again time for....

Sunday Streets Urban Golf Course!

This year's course was designed by the lovely duo of Niki Vanek and Julie Tompkins.

First things first. Sign up for a Tee Time by calling/emailing/stopping by Betty's Divine

You'll need: A crew, at least two clubs to
share - a driver and a wedge recommended, and a can of tennis balls. Kids are
welcome!

Course is 9 holes and takes approximately an hour, depending upon your crew
size and speed. Wear comfortable shoes or boots, as you’ll be playing through
some grass which may be damp and poop-strewn. Don't forget to get a group
picture taken of your crew at Betty's Divine when you check in/grab your score
card.

RULES:
1) Be aware of those around you. Yell ‘fore’ beFORE teeing off or
hitting a long drive.
2) Moving throughout the course will require some road crossing… Be
particularly careful to watch for vehicles if there are children in your
group.
3) The course progresses through alleys and streets, past houses and
cars. Please try not to hit windows, pets, plants, etc.
4) Be cautious when retrieving a stray ball! Don’t put yourself at
risk of injury in a trafficked area or water - that’s why you have extras. Begin
at Betty’s Divine by picking up a scorecard and description of the course, if
you haven’t printed these out already. Tees and holes will be marked or
described as much as possible; par was established for adults but may be
adjusted for those with smaller strokes. Have fun!!!

Here's the course description/details:
HOLE 1: LADY’S MANTLE The tee is one of the grizzly paw
prints in the corner sidewalk outside of Ciao Mambo (corner of Higgins &
4th). Hit the ball east, across Higgins and down 4th (one of those “watch
traffic and pedestrians” situations). Careful on the approach!... You’ll need
to turn the corner heading downhill, into the Water Wise Garden parking lot.
The hole is the big rock with the inscription. Take a moment to truly enjoy
this beautiful concept garden. PAR=4Extra cred: Find the Latin name for Lady’s
Mantle _______________________________________________________________

HOLE 2: GRASSY KNOLL Follow the hill path down from the
garden to the River Trail, heading west. After the native prairie area – stop
to smell some sage – you’ll see the beginning of some gnarly juniper bushes. If
you look closely on the east end of these, you’ll see an open gate which leads
to a hilly, grassy area belonging to The Missoulian. Tee is an actual tee…
Please put it back if you knock it out when teeing off. This is a fun one
because you can pretend you’re on a real course! The hole is the base of the
opposite gate. PAR=3

HOLE 3: BOONE, CROCKETT & YOU Proceed across the
parking area to the beginning of the sidewalk leading to the Boone &
Crockett Club entrance, in the Old Milwaukee Depot. Tee is near the bike rack.
Hit across the sloping sidewalk, and make for the Montana Mobile Storage can in
the parking area. Appreciate the uniqueness that is both the depot building and
the B&C Club, the nation’s oldest conservation group. Hole is at the base
of the storage can. PAR=3Extra cred: What does it say in Spanish on the plaque
for Arcadio Guerra?
____________________________________________________________________________

HOLE 4: ROUGHIN’ IT Walk down the River Trail heading
west until you reach the side trail which branches off to your right. The tee
is the base of the Butterly/Cell phone info plaque (interesting!) Tee off
toward the left, as there’s lots of water to your right, and you’ll want your
ball to land in the grass bowl area off the trail. Once you’re in the rough –
seriously, watch out for dog poop – hit toward the small pine tree on the
opposite side. This is the hole. PAR=4

HOLE 5: MOBASH Now veer right and head at a leisurely pace
to Mobash Skate Park/McCormack Park area, via the path which goes under the
Orange Street overpass. Mobash will undoubtedly be busy, so please be careful
when teeing off from the concrete X on the river side. Hit a nice long drive
down toward home plate of the baseball/kickball field facing you. If there
happens to be a game in progress, hit instead toward the bathrooms. Hole is
either home plate (if unoccupied) or the women’s bathroom door (regardless if
occupied). PAR=3Extra cred (ask a skater if you don’t know it): What’s the
name of the righteous dude who co-founded Mobash, works at Edge of the World,
and plays in a band called Bacon &
Egg?____________________________________________________________________________________

HOLE 6: THE NARROWS There are many ways to get to the next
hole, but the nicest is to walk past Silver’s Lagoon and admire the loveliness
of this little fishing spot. Cross the street – watch for traffic – then take
the path that slopes back toward the biking/walking path which goes under Orange
Street. The tee is at the base of the lonely lamppost. You might have one
person in your party hit first, then send them down to the other end of the
tunnel to watch for and warn people that balls are flying. Once you’ve hit
through the tunnel, your goal is the water fountain just off the path ahead.
PAR=3Extra cred: What is AJ Gibson’s former address?

HOLE 7: SOUTHSIDE, THE O.G. Once you’ve refreshed
yourself with some water, take a look at the water in the overflow channel that
runs under the wooden bridge. Consider springtime in Missoula and the wonder
that it is. Place your ball anywhere on the ground once you’ve crossed the
bridge, and hit up the hill on Chestnut St. (again, you might position a lookout
at the top). These streets aren’t busy, but they may have some traffic, so
carefully maneuver toward the blue dumpster at the entrance to the alley on your
left, off Chestnut between 1st and 2nd St. This is the hole. PAR=4
HOLE 8: ALLEY LIFE. This is probably one of the older alleys in Missoula, full of stories
and ghosts. And cats… Don’t hit ‘em! Tee off from the water main cover at the
west end and hit east. You’ll want to run the length of alley, then go around
the bend. The hole is base of the teal wheel on the old red Volvo parked on the
street (Hickory) PAR=3

HOLE 9: TREAT TIME! Walk down beautiful tree-lined Hickory
St. ‘til you reach the next alley, this time between 2nd & 3rd St. This
alley is luxuriously paved! Your tee is the divot in the asphalt in the middle
of the alley. Hit east, directly toward the Depot… See? You’ve come
full-circle. Head around to the right of the tan shed and through the gravel we
call Pebble Beach. The hole is the very back door of Bernice’s Bakery. You did
it! Reward yourself with a delicious treat before heading off to enjoy more
Sunday Streets.Extra cred: Who is Bernice?

BONUS HOLE FOR THOSE 21+ Make your way across 3rd St. to
the sidewalk outside Flipper’s. You’ll see a dedicated putter there… Putt your
way to the bar and order a refreshing beverage. Congratulate yourself for
exercising your many rights to recreation, and tell everyone who asks about the
fun that is Urban Golf.

Until next time….
