Born with amazing style...

...was "Little" Edie Bouvier Beale, my new style icon (just take one look at those white heels!!!)

Edie and her mother, "Big" Edith Beale, were the subjects of the 1976 Maysles Brothers documentary Grey Gardens, a film which recorded the lives of the two women in their dilapidated 28-room East Hampton estate. The movie chronicles the many colorful squabbles and intimacies of the eccentric mother-and-daughter duo and has survived the decades as a cult classic, with Little Edie serving as the film's fractured philosopher guru and outsider fashion icon.

Without too much effort and literally no money (her and her mother spent $150 a month on ice cream though...), Little Edie managed to look both glamorous and on the cutting edge of fashion.

She was a woman who knew how to rock a pair of stockings. For as little as $10-$13, you too could rock a pair of vintage-y stockings this Fall.

Little Edie took the loss of her hair in stride, and was very creative with head wraps. If you'd like to be creative as well, we have a slew of scarves right now that would look great on any head...and warm too!

Betty's doesn't have any real fur this season, but a lovely faux fur number just hit the floor (we lovingly call it Gorilla Arms) , as well as a number of other coats with faux fur trim.

Unfortunately, we don't have anything really like the ensemble below for you either...You could possibly turn around one of the deep V back dresses we have? It's unclear if anyone else could rock this look besides Edie. One thing is clear though...it's AMAZING! Especially for a 56 year old woman. Let us hope that we can all age as gracefully and stylishly.

Little Edie's over-the-top eye for wardrobe was quite evident. In the opening scenes of Grey Gardens, audiences were introduced to Little Edie clad in a clingy brown turtleneck, a pair of sun pants pinned around her waist as a makeshift skirt and what could only be identified as a sheer nun's wimple on her head. Casually explaining what she called her "costume for the day," Little Edie said to the filmmakers, "I have to make these things up. Mother wanted me to come out in a kimono and we had quite a fight."

She was truly a Betty.

PS...the HBO version starring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange is great as well...
