Q. What is a building reserve levy?
A. A building reserve is a local property tax authorized by voters to fund facility maintenance and repair, and purchase of various equipment. A building reserve levy generally pays for repairs or upgrades to roofs, flooring, plumbing, heating, electrical, phone and security systems, school building equipment and furniture, and other maintenance items.
Q. What is an operations levy?
A. On operations levy is a local property tax authorized by voters to fund the general fund, which provides for curriculum and instruction programs, classroom textbooks and supplies, extra-curricular program such as athletics, some computers and other technologies, employee salaries and benefits, fieldtrips and miscellaneous in-class programs.
Q. Are there items that these levies will not fund?
A. Building reserve levies do not pay for school district employee salaries or benefits, transportation of students to and from school, meals for students, textbooks and supplies, utilities (gas, electricity and water), and other expenditures not relating to the maintenance and equipping of District facilities.
Q. What will happen if voters do not approve these levies?
A. If voters do not approve these levies, the District will not be able to effectively maintain facilities and replace equipment. Reductions to general fund areas of the budget, curriculum and instruction programs, employee salaries and benefits, classroom supplies and textbooks, extra-curricular programs would be necessary to fund any emergency repairs or replacements. Basic maintenance would likely not occur.
