Q+A with Statriot!

Hey you know Statriot, don't you? Or maybe you know them better as "The Monfuckintana Shirts"...or perhaps you have wandered into Betty's and reluctantly asked, "Do you have those, uh, Montana shirts?" Well we sure do. With guys and girls sizes printed on American Apparel shirts, they are the ultimate fashion statement of pride for your state. Because you, my friend, are a statriot-patriot for your state? Get it? Not to mention they make some sweet stickers, koozies, hoodies, and hats!

As part of (what we hope) will become an ongoing series of interviews with local designers and artists we sat down with our buddies at Statriot, Niki, Scott, and Josh, to ask 'em a few Qs about why/where/how/why.

Who do you design for?
Statriot Designs, the Monfuckintana people.

Are you guys local (are you from Montana)?
We guys (there are three of us that do Statriot) have lived in the Treasure State for a combined errr... 60+ years or so, but by the letter of the law, two of us were born in Washington state, and one (mumbled voice) back east. We consider this place home, vote in school board elections and for mill levies, and have started pronouncing Anaconda as "Andaconda" and viewing  Niki's the most Motnanan of us because she went to High School (and some grade school) in Miles City. She grew up thinking a salad was something made from Jello and mayonnaise, and pouring ranch over damn near everything.

Why did you start Statriot?
Well, that's a good question. The word "statriot" is a made up thing that's a hybrid of the words "state" and "patriot," and that was kind of the idea from the get-go. State pride on maximum overdrive or better yet, State patriotism. At the time we started first messing around with Montana outlines, there honestly weren't a lot of things out there, other than the Chinese stuff at 10,000 Silver Dollars and soforth. Since then, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting an outline of Montana screen-printed on something by folks in Montana, and that's nice. It's good to take pride in your state and where you live, and we most certainly do. We love our wildernesses (especially the Rattlesnake and Selway-Bitterroot), lakes, rivers, mountains, cities, towns, ghost towns and empty places. Moreover we love the people and cultures that make up the West. Here in Montana you've got within about 250 miles of each other two completely different world class events in the Crow Fair on the Crow Reservation and the Bucking Horse Sale in Miles City. That blows our minds and gets us stoked. That and we like strong, bold designs and figured there's be a place for them in the world if we started doing that.

What was the first T you made?
The first Statriot T was the original Monfuckintana Osprey design. Sold 'em printed on recycled shirts at the (pre-Made Fair) DIY Bazaars that Niki organized before we got ourselves organized officially.

You guys use a lot of animals in your prints, if you had to choose a spirit animal what would it be?
Scott claims bald eagle, of course. I lean toward the turkey. Niki likes owls.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?
A two month backpack trip in south Anatolia, staying in weird places, eating feta cheese and tomatoes, and crawling around like Indiana Jones on ruins of the Lycian civilization. Got to wait til Adam can walk though.

Thanks guys!
No, thank you, Betty.

Our Friends at Secret Seconds Need Your Help!

Do you <3 Secret Seconds as much as we do? Personally, you can always find me wearing a mix of Betty's stuff and my fave Secret Seconds finds.  Not to mention it's where I get the majority of my blankets/glassware/decorative bowls. Who doesn't love the hunt of finding great second-hand stuff, for good prices, and that goes to benefit an amazing cause? Well Secret Seconds needs our help! They are trying to expand their Broadway thrift store and are just shy of their goal!

They asked us to pass this message on...

Did you know that YWCA Missoula Secret Seconds Thrift Stores generated a 16.2% increase in sales last year? That means we were able to keep MORE women and children in Missoula safe and violence-free. Think what we could do if sales were to increase even more? The Murdock Charitable Trust will give us $50k as soon as we reach our goal of raising $600k to expand our thrift store on Broadway. We are getting so close! We just have @ $10k left to raise, and we need YOUR help to get there! Click below to donate today!

July's First Friday!

Join us tonight for First Friday with our friend Nicholas Kakavas, local madcap artist extraordinaire.

Come and see his latest show, entitled "Collection 3." It is a mix of photography, screenprinting, and drawings.

The collection strikes one as intensely personal, with a focus on Kakavas' friends, innermost thoughts, and even a few self-portraits thrown in.

The boy is talented. Come by from 5-8 to enjoy the Nick's latest work, and some cheap vino and Bernice's treats of course.

Style Inspiration: SF Edition

These grey and rainy mornings we have been having reminded me of similar mornings I've had in the Bay area.  Especially since they start burning off into a nice day around noon.

And don't get me wrong, I'm just as eager for the hot, hot summer to fully commence...but there is something cozy and pleasant about these dewy, overcast mornings.  Makes me want to grab a cappuccino and wander down the beach in a comfy maxi dress in search of fossilized starfish and seal-spotting.

Or throw on a vintage-inspired denim jacket and colorful scarf and have breakfast outside at a cafĂ© in Nob Hill.

Or make a run to the Farmer's Market in the ferry building in a Michael Stars T and denim cut-offs.

Colorful leggings and tights are a necessity all year round in the Bay area...

As are comfortable shoes that can go from beach to street and back again.

And remember, the key for Bay Area style is layers, layers, layers...

Things we learned today at Betty's Divine...

Often we at Betty's are posed questions that we are not afraid to admit we don't know the answers to. Sometimes these queries have to do with things in the store...sometimes not. Alas, home girl pictured below asked us what the UV numbers mean on the $15 sunglasses we sell means. This is what Google told us:

Some manufacturers of sunglasses are as shady as the products they offer. Labeling can be ambiguous concerning the level of UV protection, and even seemingly straightforward proclamations, such as "100 percent protection," can be outright false, according a new study. In fact, most of these studies have shown that labeling is often false and that mislabeling occurs regardless of the price of the sunglasses, from cheap $15 shades to $400 designer sunglasses.

Apparently, only in Australia are sunglass manufacturers regulated as to what they claim on their labels!

For full protection, wrap-around shades are best. Your 100-percent protection must be averaged with zero-percent protection if unfiltered light enters in from the sides.
Polarized lenses reduce glare but offer no additional UV protection. Similarly, lens darkness means little; darkness is related only to the extent you want to look like a blind blues musician.

Should you be geeky enough to possess a UV laser, you can shine it through your sunglasses to estimate the level of protection.

A new blog subject has been born! Stay tuned for more "Things we learned today at Betty's" posts.
